TEAM comes first. Our goal is to provide a training atmosphere for select students who show the talent, desire, determination and drive to further their dance training more intensively. These selected students should want more from their dancing than just a class; they should be self-motivated, self disciplined and thrive off of the experience of working and achieving. We are here to train them in the hopes that they will eventually be able to pursue their dancing desires in whatever facet they should choose.
Each year a new team or teams are formed. Final recommendations and class placements for the competitive level will come in August as Summer Intensives will determine that.Each year the dynamics change. It isn't only about age, ability & experience, but also about chemistry and compatibility.
COMPETITIVE LEVEL DANCERS ARE REQUIRED TO ATTEND DANCE INTENSIVES TRAINING DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS.
Absences & Tardiness
Absence needs to be kept to the absolute minimum and tardiness is unacceptable at this level. Leaving class early to go to another activity is also not allowed. The only acceptable reason for missing team class is illness. We expect you to be in class unless the absence has been approved by the Director. Excessive absences will result in dismissal from the Team. At this level any time lost is significant. School dances, camping trips, sports, plays, concerts, sleepovers, birthday parties, family vacations etc. are not acceptable reasons to miss class. It is expected that all other activities, events & commitments come second to the Competitive Team. Anything extra taken on that is not required or mandatory for a grade at school should come second to Team. *The only other thing taken into consideration is religious commitments. Good studies and good time management skills should keep grades up and avoid homework overload. There will not be a specific number of absences allowed. You will be notified immediately if your status is in danger. It will be the director’s and instructor’s decision to determine if you can still train with the Team with no competition opportunities. It should be of no concern if your child truly only misses when sick. Extenuating circumstances would be taken into consideration of course. Anyone who does not attend class the week of competition will not be able to participate at that competition-even if you have already paid the entry fees. *It is the dancer’s responsibility to get caught up on missed choreography before they return to class. It is recommended to get together with another classmate. If that is not an option, you can book a private lesson with the instructor(see private lesson rate). Please do not abuse the absence policy. It is not fair to those who are 100% committed and sacrifice other things for the Team.
Sickness - Injury - Sitting Out
If students are too sick to participate in class, students should stay home and get well!! If you are contagious, please stay home. If feeling just a little under the weather, please inform us so the instructors know- students should participate, but take it easy during class that day. The only time students should sit out of class is if they are injured(not ill) and cannot at least mark through the class. Parents, please let us teachers know if your child is going through a tough time at school, or with family, health etc. - we can then be more understanding of their situation.
Expectations for Team Members
All Team members should know that they are in a special and privileged program. We expect complete cooperation with the rules and policies that have been set. Students are expected to have a strong desire to further their dancing and performance skills. The Team must come before any other sport or activity, if a conflict comes about it is expected that the dance team comes first. We feel this is the student’s responsibility and they should be well aware of this before accepting team membership. A Team dancer shouldn’t want to be anywhere else but dancing. The students should want this without it being enforced by the parents or instructors. This should be an enjoyable experience for them where they learn the rewards and accomplishments of training and working hard.
Expectations for Parents
We understand that you as the parents have made sacrifices for your children to be part of this dance program. With your support and encouragement of not only your child(ren) but all the children and their teachers, we will have a successful TEAM. Please, if you have any questions or concerns come to us!! You should not approach us during or between classes, this is when we are teaching your children. Please leave a message on the machine or e-mail us at [email protected] Although we try very hard to be informative and upfront with all information, there are times when changes may occur to your class schedule, teachers, times etc. Your flexibility and cooperation is necessary and appreciated. When changes do occur it is up to the director to make the choice most beneficial for all team members, instructors and parents. Positive comments and reinforcements among all members, teachers and parents bring about positive results. We are here to educate your children and with your support this can be a wonderful & memorable experience in their life.Parents should not call or contact competitions directly for any reason what so ever. It is not your place nor do they want you to do so. Also at competition, never hand in music, pick up music, retrieve score sheets, approach a judge or represent The Studio without acknowledgment from the director.
All Team members are required to take Ballet Technique.

BALLET: solid black leotard, pink tights** A black wrap sweater may be worn in the colder weather **
**Black leg warmers may be worn**
**Black fitted spandex or knitted sweater shorts may be worn**
Ballet Shoes: Revolution Dancewear Canvas split-sole classic pink
Pointe shoes upon teacher approval.
Ballet Hair: a secured bun with bangs slicked back
TAP-JAZZ-LYRICAL/CONTEMPORARY: Any solid black fitted dancewear such as leotard & tights, fitted camisole
or bra top and fitted leggings. If Tap, Jazz or Lyrical/Contemporary are on the same day as Ballet, bring black leggings to put over pink tights.
**No boot leg, loose or flare pants-fitted ankle length leggings.

HIP HOP: Any style of sneakers to be worn in the studio only. Dancers can wear any fun & funky clothing (solid black-any style) that can easily be slipped on over dance clothes from previous classes.
Hair For Tap-Jazz-Lyrical/Contemp-Hip Hop: ponytail(s), braids, French braid or bun with bangs slicked.
STUDENTS WILL BE ASKED TO OBSERVE CLASS IF THEY ARE NOT IN FULL DRESS CODE.
****ALL COMPETITION TEAM DANCERS ARE REQUIRED TO TAKE BALLET.
****ALL HIP HOP CREW MEMBERS ARE REQUIRED TO TAKE STRETCH & STRENGTH/CONDITIONING
****BALLET WILL NOT GO TO COMPETITION, BUT THERE WILL BE A PERFORMANCE FOR THE RECITAL.
All entry fees are due at least 6 weeks prior to the 1st competition date. As soon as we get confirmed competition dates, we will let you know the exact due dates and fees. There will be 2 mandatory competitions with a possible third optional. The competitions are generally in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey or Rhode Island. Competitions generally run three days Friday through Sunday. You are expected to be available any or all days of the competition weekend. You may need to book a hotel room depending on the location and schedule. Competition schedules and performance times are not given to us until approximately one week prior to the competition dates. The season can run anywhere from January-May. You will receive competition dates/times the moment we know them. Competition entry fees are approximately $30-$45 per person per group dance. Solo, duet & trio fees are more.

WORKSHOPS & SEMINARS
There are various workshops and seminars we may attend throughout the year. We also may host some at our own studio. We highly recommend these as they are a great learning experience for these dancers. Further information will be handed out.
At various times throughout the year, guest teachers may come in to instruct your class or we may offer a special class for you at another time.

*Must be 13 years old or older to attend drop-in classes at Broadway Dance Center. Steps on Broadway has more choices for children. There may be opportunities throughout the season to train in NYC.
